I’m Nancy Ferguson McKinney, a designer, communications professional and educator with 30+ years of experience.
Based in Belleville, Ontario.
My Career
My career has always come down to the same thing: taking something complicated and making it understandable. I've done that work as a technical writer at IBM, in tech support and training at a Toronto Bay Street law firm, as an English teacher, and in compliance and communications in the insurance industry. Since 2008, I've also run Flink Design, my independent practice.
Whether it's a brand system, a 600-page publication, a tourism map, a website or a compliance document, the work is the same: help people find their way through information, places and systems.
My Philosophy
The common thread through my work isn't a particular style or medium—it's bringing clarity to complexity. Whether I'm designing a brand system, a publication, a tourism map, a website or a learning resource, I'm organizing information so people can understand it, use it and move forward with confidence. I connect strategy, structure and visual communication to create systems that work today and continue working over time.
The Name
Flink comes from the Norwegian word for "motivated, clever and curious," which captures how I approach every project.
Freelance Folio + the Freelance Studio
I conceived and developed Freelance Folio, a web-based app built around the real needs of Canadian freelancers. That experience has also led to the Freelance Studio, where I’m developing practical workshops and resources for people who want to use AI more thoughtfully and effectively in their work.
I also develop and deliver customized AI training for organizations, focused on practical use rather than the technology itself: understanding what these tools can do, where human judgement still matters and how to use them well.
Who I Work With
I work with independent professionals, small businesses, associations, municipalities and regional organizations. Much of my work is ongoing — annual publications, long-term client relationships and projects that evolve over time.
